THIRTEEN

GREYSEN

It was morning already, though still dark out, and Greysen pulled the car up in front of Humavision. Carrie stood there with her weekender bag by her feet, and a large black suitcase next to her. She wore a camel-colored trench coat and nylons. She always looked so professional, even when they were about to embark on a nine-hour road trip. Perhaps because she wanted to compensate for how young she was. She always dressed as though she were older, though she was definitely half Greysen's age.

She didn’t need to do that for him. Greysen respected her for the hard work she put in, not for her age or any other irrelevant factor. Though of course, he could never bring that up, because then it would be at the forefront of her mind.

"Morning, Boss," she said, moving to the back of the car.

Greysen popped the trunk from the driver seat and pushed open the door to get out. Though when he reached the back of the car, Carrie had already tossed her own bag in, next to the black duffle, and made her way back to the passenger side.

“You want to grab the suitcase? It’s heavy with the memory machine in there.” She slammed the door shut.

He nodded, rocking on his feet for an awkward moment before he followed suit. Greysen wheeled the suitcase to the back and carefully lifted it into the trunk. Then, he rounded the car and sat in the driver’s seat. He sighed and then took a side glance at her.

"What, did you want me to sit in the back or something?" She motioned to the back seat.

"Oh, no, sorry." Greysen snapped out of his trance. "No, Parker has a guest. His fiancé. She's coming along for the ride. I figured the two of them could ride in the back."

"His fiancé?" she asked, emphasizing the word. She placed her travel coffee mug in the center console cup holder.

Why didn't I think of coffee? This looked like something she'd brought from home. Surely, if she'd gone out, she would have texted him to ask if he'd wanted anything. More importantly, did the sound of her voice imply she was interested in Parker? It indicated she was definitely surprised he was promised to someone. And the fact that they were here, even.

Greysen hadn't sensed any chemistry between the two of them. Guess I'll find out soon enough, being stuck in the car together for so long. But then, Carrie most likely would never act on any feelings, if she had them, when Parker had his fiancé right here with them.

Greysen hit the gas, easing onto the road. The motel was just around the corner.

"I've already canceled all your appointments, so you shouldn't be needed here. Of course, look at your email periodically for the blueprint prototypes to come back for approval. But it's not time-sensitive." She pushed her glasses up on the bridge of her nose and poked at her phone in her lap.
